Fishing, Herding, Adulting and a Fandango in Oak Grove

Now that the out-of-doors is finally open, get in some daytime excursions before hitting the town. Three animal events occur eastwardly this weekend; Fishing Derby in Detroit, Lamb Fair in Scio and the Pet Parade in Silverton. For the literary-inclined, there’s a book signing by Salem celeb Kelly Williams Brown at the Grand Theater Friday, where  she dollops up some tips from her book, “Adulting: How to Become A Grown-Up in 468 Easy(ish) Steps”.  Sparkling under the lights, Kelly’s sure to delight.

After taking in some sheep herding, mosey over to experience  The Oregon Valley Boys in their natural habitat – a turn of the century grange hall. They are throwing a fandango amidst the mighty oaks and silhouetted Eolas. Finish the night with the soothing tones of the Rich McCloud Band at Venti’s Taphouse.  Here are the Salem Pipeline picks for the weekend.

First Friday, Blackbox Theater, Falcon rereunion & Oh My My, My Oh Mys

It’s First Friday in Salem with quite a variety to offer – art, live music, culture and more. Here’s a quick round up for happenings this weekend.

Friday, March 1 -  Lull yourself into the evening around 6 at Pop Up art gallery for Art Spree. Brian Hansen will be working on his a portable mural with live music in the learners corner. Gilgamesh Brewing (21+w/ID) and Fresh N Local are provide refreshments for the monthly artist reception and social.

There’s a 7p open mic night at the Beanery that’s gaining popularity and Lonesome Hollow, some boundary-pushing blackbox theater at the Cyrus Reed.

For a quieter evening, Boon’s Treasury has the Oh My Mys, a Portland two-piece folk rock band at 9p.

For a little more energy, check out The Falcon at the Triangle when they play with Midnight Persuasion and Hustle and Drone. Here’s a great shot of the band taken by Will Bragg when they opened for The Thermals back in 2009.

Let’s just say they know how to rock, just like the rest of the line-up. Probably starts after 9p.

On Saturday Mar 2, Venti’s Taphouse Craft Brewed Concerts features The My Oh Mys and RedRay Frasier. For a quieter, more intimate place to celebrate the Cat in the Hat, visit Maven on State Street for some delicious cocktails.

We’re going down the rabbit hole into a frenzy of acoustic storyland fun at The Great Idea Friday throughout the Enchanted Forest. More than 40 bands perform during the 8 hour event organized by The Space. More traditional fun is offered at Homer Davenport days and the Yamhill County Fair throughout the weekend. And for the truly nostalgic, Air Supply resurrects the 80′s cause we’re all out of love on Friday at Spirit Mountain Casino.

Too much fun going on this weekend. The under-the-radar weekend rave, EMRG+N+SEE returns to Salem with the west coast’s foremost trance party. And, in addition to the Salem Art Fair, 800 bad-ass white collar bikers will be in town for Good Vibrations, a mid-valley wide party on two wheels. And if that’s not enough, there’s plenty-o-rama at the fairgrounds with Cherry City Bombers Rust-O-Rama, Cherry City Derby Girls Roller Rama and the Pretty Things Peepshow. Just when you thought things couldn’t get any hotter in Salem!

Plenty of fireworks, cowboys, punk rock light up weekend 75+ concerts, events concerts July 1-7

There will plenty of fireworks in all directions this weekend for your colorful Fourth of July. Salem, McMinnville, Willamina, Independence, Keizer, Silverton and Corvallis are some of the patriotic towns that will host celebrations. Each has their own character, so get there early and enjoy the show.

This year marks the 75th St. Paul Rodeo, one of the best in the nation, going on all weekend.  Don’t forget to stop in under the bleachers after the show.

The Wasteland hosts a high energy punk show not to be missed Saturday with Gruk, Adelitas, The Wobblies and The Angries. This is Gruk’s farewell tour and they’ll have plenty of help with some great local acts.

Have a memorable weekend and don’t forget to play it safe with your fireworks!

The big shows this weekend happen Friday at Ike Box and Saturday at Columbus Hall. Warble Records showcase at Ike Box includes Massive Moth, Hank Porche, the Depths and The Volks. Be prepared for heartfelt talent. At Columbus Hall, Mitch Duafa has put together a stunning line-up for the Haiti Benefit. Mitch will debut the his band, Monoplane, which features decades of Salem talent with members David Ballantyne, Doug Hoffman and Matt Hall. This may be THE new Salem Super Group.

What’s wrong with Salem? Absolutely nothing (this weekend) 65+ events concerts, parties June 10-16

Okay, who missed the memo about nothing happening in town? Because this weekend we have way too much fun going on. Friday night brings us a match made in purgatory – Kaddy Wumpus and The Skunky Bunch at the Triangle. The Wine Walk downtown starts at Coffee House Cafe and there’s more late night mayhem at Westside Station with Just the Tip. And what are we going to choose Saturday? The infamous Gemini Party is celebrating over a decade of merriment at the Miller Ranch. Matty, Kid Espi and crew are taking over Coffee House with world-class hip hop. And the Cafe Noir Annex finally cleared the permitting process and will bust open the new digs with Bold Riley, Spiral and Gobel Warming. For the free speech-minded, the Oregon Freedom Festival goes on all day Saturday with Hollie Pollock closing.
Then Sunday, Norman entertains us with an outdoor concert at Mission Mill.
How can this be topped? With an all out visual assault by Oakland’s Can-Cannibals on Wednesday. The Space is rolling out the splatter mats for a once in a lifetime show with the queens of raunch burlesque and Squirmin Hermans, Potatoe Famine are adding to the fun.

Too wild? Then stop by ƒ/stop Fitzgerald’s for the pastie-making afterparty to catch the troupe in a more relaxed environment and pick up a few crafting tips.

The only downer this weekend is the news that The Space lost round one of their noise complaint appeal. Stay-tuned for the next step, because there will definitely be one.

Summer starts with a bang! There’s a great exhibit opening at Hallie Ford Museum Friday – Alfredo Arreguin: El Esplendor de la Selva. Go to the opening or check it out for free on Tuesday. On Saturday, the Derby Girls are throwing a party at Flipside. Team Panhandle is raising money for their trip to Rollercon in Vegas and want you to come party with them. There are more sheep than you can shake a stick at during the Turner Celebration in downtown Turner on Saturday. Don’t let the weather get you down. Go outside and get wet!

If you’re sticking around town this weekend, take in the local scenery and visit a few of the wineries this weekend. Forget a plan, just follow the slow-moving cars winding their way through our beautiful countryside – you’ll hit a winery eventually. Friday night there’s a DVD release of locally-filmed Uncle Bingo at the ƒ/stop visual arts center. Tuesday, check out the debut of Jonathan’s Happy Hour.
